The scope of this document is limited to existing railway Earthworks. Guidance is provided on the derivation of values of the variables that govern the performance of an Earthwork, and which may be used to design remedial works to the Earthwork.

The management of flooding and scour is not addressed in this document; it is covered in NR/SP/CIV/086: Management of existing Earthworks.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on the Evaluation and Assessment of Earthworks. The objectives of these key activities of the asset management cycle are (a) to determine or confirm the stability of existing Earthworks, and (b) to assess the risk posed by the continued use of an Earthwork. The information from (a) and (b) may be used in the design of remedial works to the Earthwork.

This Guidance Note supplements NR/SP/CIV/086: Management of existing Earthworks1.

1 The content of this Guidance Note will be incorporated into the next revision of NR/SP/CIV/086, at which point this Guidance Note will be withdrawn.
