Hydrogen gas vehicle fueling station compressor guidelines
Organization: | CSA/AM |
Publication Date: | 1 January 2012 |
Status: | active |
Page Count: | 48 |
scope:
This standard contains safety requirements for material, design, manufacture and testing of gaseous hydrogen compressor packages used in fueling station service. This standard applies to newly manufactured equipment designed primarily to provide compressed hydrogen for vehicle fueling stations.
This standard does not apply to:
a) Vehicle Fueling Appliances for HGV
b) Compressor packages used for non-vehicular fuel applications (e.g. power generation units)
c) Internal combustion engine driven compressor
All references to pressure throughout this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
If the value for measurement as given in this standard is followed by an equivalent value in other units, the first stated value is to be regarded as the specification.
Test gas as specified in these requirements shall be:
• hydrogen or helium for leak tests,
• liquids (e.g., water or oil ) for hydrostatic strength tests,
• hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, or dry air for all other tests.
Applications
Except as stated in this standard, compressor packages shall be designed, manufactured, and tested in accordance with the applicable requirements of the standards referenced. Unless otherwise indicated in this standard, the latest edition of any referenced standard/code shall be used.
In applications where multiple compressor packages are installed in parallel, these packages shall be considered as independent units.
In applications where multiple compressors are required in series, all compressors shall be considered as a single package.
Representation
Design assumptions
Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, the following criteria shall be used for design: Molecular weight of 2.016
Design criteria
The following shall be provided with the following minimum criteria regarding the compressor design:
a) Ambient temperature 21C (70F);
b) Suction gas temperature;
c) Suction gas pressure;
d) Required flow;
e) Discharge pressure;
f) Available electric power
Note: Caution should be exercised in applying air cooled heat exchangers because of their susceptibility to pulsation induced vibration in systems and structures. Mechanical natural frequencies and acoustic (organ-pipe) frequencies should not be coincident with pulsation frequencies generated by the compressor.
Compressor package performance curves
The compressor package performance curves shall be provided and shall cover the range of operating conditions specified in section 1.3. Any limitations such as rod load, available driver horsepower, additional clearance required to meet the range of operating conditions, etc., shall be marked on the performance curves.
Package arrangement
The arrangement of the package components shall be designed and developed to provide reasonable access for operation and maintenance.
Drawings
As-built plan, elevation drawings, piping and instrumentation (P&I), and electrical schematic drawings shall be furnished. Additional drawings may be specified.
Sound pressure level
Control of the sound pressure level of all equipment furnished shall be the within levels required by local codes.
Electrical location classification
Electrical installations shall, as a minimum, be in accordance with the latest editions of NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, and NFPA 2, Hydrogen Technologies Code. When the compressor is not installed in an enclosure, the installation is classified as NEC ---- Division 2, NFPA 70, National Electrical Code.
Package installation
The packager shall stipulate package installation instructions on the "Packager's Representation". The unit and its auxiliaries shall be suitable for operation in these specified conditions.
Torsional soundness
The compressor packager shall assume responsibility for a torsionally sound system.
Labeling Suitable
cautionary labeling is required (may include symbols) in accordance with local codes and standards.
