General Requirements:
Wood products to be used in permanent locations where exposed to decay or attack by other wood-destroying organisms should be impregnated with a preservative chemical(s). Only those species and preservatives are listed in the Use Category System Standards that have previously been found suitable for use in this particular application, or sufficient test information has been submitted to warrant their inclusion.
The end use of a wood product to be treated should be specified so that the treating organization can provide, within the limits of variability inherent in the materials and methods, the most satisfactory treatment for that particular product.
The preservative chemical specified should be chosen from one of the AWPA Preservative Standards ("P" Standards).
The method of treatment specified, including retention required, should be chosen from the AWPA Use Category System Standards.
Heating times and temperatures during drying and/or treatment of poles and piles manufactured from species included in AWPA Standards U1 and T1, excluding Alaska Yellow Cedar and Western Red Cedar, should be sufficient to obtain a temperature of at least 66o C (150o F) at the pith center of the entire pole or pile for at least one hour, to assure sterilization.
