Purpose.

Ambient temperature cure adhesives rely on appropriate surface quality/cleanliness to achieve passing bonding/strength results. This GMW specification defines test methods needed to approve surface quality of Aluminum.

Ambient temperature cure adhesives that do not use an oven bake to cure rely on clean surfaces free of all contaminants to achieve passing bonding/strength properties. This specification defines the following two (2) test methods that will be used to establish clean and acceptable surfaces ready to receive ambient temperature cure adhesives.

Surface Energy (ASTM D2578 and ISO 8296).

This test method involves using Dyne Ink #45 to evaluate the surface energy for pass or fail. (See Figure 1 and Figure 2).

Dust levels on Surface (ISO 8502-3).

This test method involves using a certified tape adhesive and magnification to determine dust level that is considered pass or fail. (See Figure 3 and Table 1).
