Purpose

The purpose of this standard is to define technical requirements necessary to produce human-rated space systems that protect the safety of the crew and passengers on NASA space missions.

Applicability

This standard is applicable to crewed space systems developed or operated by NASA and to crewed space systems used to conduct NASA human spaceflight missions as specified by NPR 8705.2.

This standard is applicable to NASA Headquarters and NASA Centers, including Component Facilities and Technical and Service Support Centers.

In this standard, all mandatory actions (i.e., requirements) are denoted by statements containing the term "shall." The terms "may" denotes a discretionary privilege or permission, "can" denotes statements of possibility or capability, "should" denotes a good practice and is recommended, but not required, "will" denotes expected outcome, and "are/is" denotes descriptive material.
