RISER GAS HANDLING

Riser Gas Handling Guidelines

active, Most Current
Publication Date: 1 January 2023
Status: active
Page Count: 16
scope:

The recommendations in this document are intended to provide guidance on the development of procedures for safely managing and removing hydrocarbons that may or may not be present in the riser system with the well isolated from the riser and re-establishment of safe operating conditions before returning to the planned operations on the rig.

Managing gas in the riser with the BOPs closed is not a well control operation, as the well is isolated from the riser. For circulation of influxes through the riser without closing the BOP when using an MPD system, refer to API RP 92S.

Handling gas on rigs not fitted with dedicated equipment as per these guidelines

These guidelines are not intended for operations on rigs not fitted with dedicated MPD or riser gas handling (RGH) equipment, as described in section 7 of this document. For those rigs, personnel should follow the IADC Deep Water Well Control Guidelines (Chapter 4 - WELL CONTROL PROCEDURES, Section 4.7 - Gas in Riser: riser recovery).
