scope:
This document shall be used by Project Managers, system designers (both mast and earth designers), implementation engineers and others involved in the design and implementation of radio mast Lightning Protection and Earthing systems.
Purpose
This specification details the design requirements for a Lightning Protection and Earthing System (LP&ES) for permanent radio mast structures located on Network Rail land, property or TOC leased land. The design objective is to dissipate direct lightning strike currents (up to 200k Amps for positive strikes and 100k Amps for negative strikes) into earth mass effectively to minimise the risk to personnel and to ensure the damage to radio and other equipment located in the immediate vicinity of the radio mast is minimised by ensuring Ground Potential Rise is limited. This specification does not cover installation or testing requirements, as these shall be addressed in separate standards.
This specification does not cover the requirements for the location of the mast in relation to electrification plant, signalling and telecommunication systems as this is covered by RT/E/P/30066.
