This procedure applies to the management of protected sites, species and biodiversity on Network Rail land with regards to the function of Maintenance. The procedure also includes work undertaken by Network Rail's contractors.

This procedure applies to:

• Any maintainer with responsibility for managing land which is subject to legal protection

• Any maintainer planning to undertake work within or adjacent to a legally protected site

• Any maintainer who plans to undertake works where legally protected plants or animals may be present or nearby

• You if you manage activities where maintenance work is undertaken

• You if you are responsible for leading environmental management

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to define operational requirements to ensure compliance with legislation and to prevent damage to both protected sites and species. This document complements Network Rail's Biodiversity Action Plan that provides practical guidance on good management practices that maintain biodiversity.
