General
There should be no possibility of drivers being confused by signals that are not in use. Any signals that have been erected but not yet brought into use (or have been taken out of use and not removed) should therefore be easily recognisable as such by treating them as shown below.
Signals taken out of use should be removed as soon as possible, but when this cannot be done immediately, all lamps need to be removed and the signals treated as out of use.
Internal masking within the signal casing should not be used for any form of signal. It is too easily forgotten or dislodged.
When only part of a signal is out of use, that part shall not be covered or marked with a cross, since drivers might misinterpret this as applying to the whole signal.
Always make sure that any covering is well secured.
Make a note in your log book of all the signals that have been masked or otherwise treated so that this information can be passed on testing staff.
