scope:
This standard describes the process by which the Maintenance function will:
• Assess the risks to Maintenance function employees performing tasks with hand held tools and machines which have the potential to cause Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) or carpal tunnel syndrome.
• Identify Maintenance staff affected into the prescribed level of necessary health surveillance
• Comply with the requirements described in NR/L2/OHS/00113 are applied when carrying out health surveillance Maintenance
This standard applies to all staff who carry out Maintenance activities which may be affected by the identified hand held tools and machines to the prescribed level laid down in NR/L2/OHS/00113. This procedure also applies to all Maintenance and Human Resources Managers including the respective Safety Advisors who have a responsibility to advise employees of the risks of such work they are asked to perform.
Purpose
It is a legal requirement that all Maintenance function employees who are identified as performing tasks with hand held tools and machines which have the potential to cause hand arm vibration or carpal tunnel syndrome injuries as laid down in the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 and associated guidance information, are assessed for such symptoms.
It is also a legal requirement to inform all identified employees as to the effects and conditions of symptoms and the various preventative measures which are available to reduce the risk of HAVS.
