This part of the handbook provides guidance on establishing a risk based examination regime for each Structure.

This part of the handbook applies to all Network Rail owned or managed and Shared Outside Party Bridges, Culverts, Retaining Walls (normally excluding Minor Retaining Walls), Tunnels, Coastal, Estuarine and River Defences and Ancillary Structures that have been assigned to Structure Categories A, B, C, F and G in accordance with NR/L1/CIV/032: Managing existing Structures¹.

Purpose

The purpose of this part of the handbook is to provide guidance and information to enable a risk based examination regime for Structures to be determined and put in place using intervals which safely manage the risks to the safe use and performance of a Structure commensurate with the duty and type of Structure.
