Use of ATWS & Vortok "3-Foot" Fence to Protect Track Work

inactive
Organization: NR
Publication Date: 22 June 2006
Status: inactive
Page Count: 9
scope:

This procedure applies to the re-railing and renewal of track where the nearest rail of an adjacent track open to traffic and could be fouled by a machine or load. It details the procedures to be adopted when working adjacent to a line, which will remain open to traffic for the duration of the works.

It ensures that machines cease working on a line adjacent to an open line when a train passes. Additional track worker protection is provided by the use of Vortok fencing set at a minimum of 0.9m from the open line to provide demarcation.

This procedure shall only be used where a T3 or T2 blockage of the adjacent line is not available.

Purpose

This procedure sets out the process for using ATWS together with Vortok fencing to protect track work in the circumstances defined below. The requirements for the application of Automatic Track Warning System (ATWS) are set out in the operating procedures approved as part of Network Rail's Acceptance procedures
