• Applies to all forms of visual inspection, by maintenance teams at Area and Delivery Unit levels. These include but are not limited to:

• Basic visual track inspection

• Supervisor visual track inspection (including cab riding and renewal proposal identification)

• Track Maintenance Engineer visual track inspection (including cab riding and renewal proposal identification)

• Buffer stops

• Tunnel inspection

• Longitudinal timbers

• Switches secured out of use

• Handpoints

• Inspection and repair procedures to reduce the risk of derailment at switches in accordance with NR/SP/TRK/053

• Track drainage

• Fencing

• AMS/MHT switches

• DOES NOT apply to ultrasonic inspection covered by Management of manual ultrasonic rail testing NR/PRC/MTC/TK0084

• DOES NOT apply to inspection of welds covered by Management of rail welding NR/PRC/MTC/TK0081

Purpose

This Procedure defines the standard process, roles and responsibilities for visual inspection on the network in accordance with Inspection and Maintenance of Permanent Way NR/SP/TRK/001 and Track Inspection Handbook NR/WI/TRK/001.
