This Work Instruction applies to the installation of new lineside telephones. Where like for like renewals take place these principles shall be applied as far as reasonably practicable.

For the purposes of this standard the term Lineside telephone shall also include the support post on which the telephone is installed and the tail cable.

The four types of lineside telephone covered by this Work Instruction are:-

1. Signal post telephone (SPT)

2. Other direct lines to signal boxes

3. Platform telephone

4. Level crossings telephones

The Work Instruction also shows an example of an anti-vandal installation method.

This Work Instruction does not include the installation of plug points.

This Work Instruction does not cover the health and safety requirements for the carrying out of the installation.

Purpose

This Work Instruction in support of NR/SP/TE/30094 - Installation of Telecommunications Equipment and Systems, mandates the installation requirements for the installation of lineside telephones on Network Rail infrastructure.
