GENERAL DESCRIPTION.
Miniature stop light (MSL), crossings are confined to private user worked crossings, footpaths, bridleways and station crossings. They cannot be used on public vehicular crossings.
New crossings shall not be installed over more than 2 rail tracks.
The preferred position for MSL's is on the approach side of the crossing facing outwards at nearly 90 degrees to the line of the railway.
For sites with angled approaches, the MSL's may be angled to match the line of the approach, subject to any signal sighting considerations.
However as the angle is increased, there are sites where angling the MSL's to match the approach becomes impractical. An example is a station crossing that is associated with tight 90 degree bends at the bottom of the platform ramps next to the crossing. With this or similar arrangements it can be difficult to find a practical position for an MSL on the approach side where it can be readily seen by pedestrians using the crossing yet not be noticeable to approaching train drivers. The best compromise position in this situation may be to place the MSL's on the far side of the crossing facing back across it and provide extra signing on the approach side.
If any MSL head is required to face within 60 degrees of the line of the railway, it may be seen and taken by an approaching train driver for a running signal. The proposed arrangement shall be discussed with a signal sighting engineer who may on his own discretion close the matter at this point if he considers no significant risk exists. If he considers there is a significant risk, it shall be dealt with it through the normal signal sighting process. If special fittings or alignment are necessary, that shall be recorded on the ground plan if one exists, or on a signal sighting form specially produced for the MSL.
Where the crossing is pedestrian only, the MSL units are provided in one of the following positions. Usually the same arrangement shall be provided at each side of the crossing:-
• Where the gate or style is close to the decision point, they may be mounted on the clapper post of the wicket gate, or on a separate post sited close to the clapper post.
• Where there is a considerable distance from the gate or style to the decision point, the MSL shall be on a post by the decision point
• Where at station crossings without gates or styles, the MSL's are sited on the approach side of the crossing, the MSL's shall be on a post by the decision point
• Where at station crossings without gates or styles, MSL's are arranged to face across the crossing, they may be mounted on any suitable post or convenient structure that allows them to be clearly seen across the crossing from the decision point
