Inclusions
This Standard sets out the:
(a) Requirements for the design, application and testing of graphical symbols and explanatory words for outdoor recreation and sport (including water-based) activities;
(b) Specifications for the use of the symbols in various media.
The symbols in this Standard will provide a means for communicating about:
(i) Hazardous conditions;
(ii) Accessibility, facilities, services and features;
(iii) Areas where activities are permitted or prohibited.
Exclusions
Signage relating to water safety shall be as specified in NZS 8690.
Application
This Standard applies to the use of graphical symbols and/or accompanying text, in a range of media and is applicable to all users of outdoor recreational pursuits, including:
(a) Local and central government;
(b) Other providers of outdoor recreation facilities;
(c) Sports and recreational training providers;
(d) The tourism industry.
The Traffic Regulations and MOTSAM
Symbols used in traffic signs shall comply with the Traffic Regulations and the MOTSAM.
The application of these traffic management symbols shall be consistent with the Traffic Regulations.
