This Standard provides guidance for all organizations, but particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), on the phased development, implementation, maintenance and improvement of an environmental management system. It also includes advice on the integration and use of environmental performance evaluation techniques.

This Standard is applicable to any organization, regardless of its level of development, the nature of the activities undertaken or the location at which they occur.

NOTE: The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.

ISO 14005: 2010 Environmental management systems-Guidelines for the phased implementation of an environmental management system, including the use of environmental performance evaluation (IDT)

In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/lEC Guide 21-1.
