scope:
This specification covers the qualification and performance requirements for exterior rigid, one-component (1K), solventborne basecoat and one-component (1K), matte finish (low gloss), solventborne clearcoat topcoats that perform over bake latitude of 115 °C to 145 °C (240 °F to 290 °F). Typical volume solids as sprayed are 35 to 50% for basecoat and 45 to 60% solids for clearcoat. This topcoat system is intended to be used on rigid and semi-rigid substrates painted outside of the assembly plant.
Material Description. Basecoat components of these systems are typically one-component (solvent) acrylic melamine. Clearcoat components of these systems are one-component (solvent) technologies with varying cross-linking chemistries.
Qualified to this Material Specification. Each combination of specific basecoat and clearcoat must be tested and approved as a basecoat/clearcoat system. The individual components are not interchangeable and are approved for use only with combinations of basecoat/clearcoat of the total paint system which were used in qualification testing.
Symbols. Not applicable.
Typical Applications. These topcoats are designed to be applied over a baked primer. Clearcoats covered under this specification are intended to be applied wet-on-wet over the basecoat.
Remarks. None.
