THE Ship Structure Committee was appointed in July 1946 by the Secretary of the Treasury based on a recommendation in the Final Report of the Board of Investigation to Inquire into the Design and Methods of Construction of Welded Steel Merchant Vessels that "an organization be established to formulate and coordinate research in matters pertaining to ship structure in the same manner as has been the practice during the tenure of the Board." The charge to the Committee contains a three-fold objective, namely: (a) to initiate and arrange for the financing and coordination of research and development pertaining to the hull structure of ships; (b) to integrate and interpret results; and (c) to disseminate pertinent information to those people interested in building and operating ships.
