Diese Internationale Norm legt Kriterien für die Auswahl von Probenahmeverfahren und -geräten (Einsatzbereiche und Funktionseigenschaften) für die Beurteilung benthischer Makroinvertebraten- Populationen des Süßwassers (Flüsse, Kanäle, Seen und Talsperren) fest. Die in dieser Internationalen Norm betrachteten Verfahren und Geräte sind für die Probenahme aller wesentlichen Komponenten der benthischen Besiedlung geeignet. Sie sind nicht geeignet für die Probenahme der Meiofauna.
