This document specifies requirements and methods of test for type EL fuel oil, that is particularly suitable for use in firing installations in accordance with DIN 4755 and oil appliances in accordance with Technische Regeln Ölanlagen (TRÖl).

This standard specifies two grades of type EL fuel oil, depending on the sulfur content (see 3.1 and 3.2). Some manufacturers' specifications or local regulations on waste water (e.g. Arbeitsblatt (Code of practice) ATV-DVWK-A 251) [1]) may stipulate that only low-sulfur type EL fuel oil to DIN 51603-1 is to be used for certain installations.

NOTE For the purposes of this standard "% (V/V)" or "% (m/m)" are used to express percentages by volume or percentages by mass.
