GENERAL
This leaflet summarises the protocols to be followed to ensure all operational communications are clearly understood, particularly those relating to safety information. Remember the ABC of communication: be Accurate, Brief and Clear. Following this process, in conjunction with the protocols defined in the rules, removes many potential hazards. Such hazards include assumption, over-familiarity, slang and accents, each of which can lead to miscommunication and misunderstanding. Any one of these can set up the potential for unsafe acts, conditons or decisions - the underlying causes of many incidents and accidents.
This leaflet sets out best practice for communications conducted via radio and telephone. However, some of the protocols listed in this leaflet are also applicable to face to face communication.
