This Standard contains requirements for the competence of bodies performing inspection and for the impartiality and consistency of their inspection activities.

It applies to inspection bodies of type A, B or C, as defined in this Standard, and it applies to any stage of inspection.

NOTE 1 The stages of inspection include design stage, type examination, initial inspection, in-service inspection or surveillance.

NOTE 2 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.

ISO/IEC 17020: 2012 Conformity assessment-Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection (IDT)

The symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/lEC Guide 21-1.
