This STANAG is one of three STANAGs 4662, 4663 and 4664 for the exchange of environmental data. It adopts and implements, within NATO, the Spatial Reference Model (SRM), which was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is a part of the Synthetic Environmental Data Representation and Interchange Specification (SEDRIS) family of standards developed as the ISO/IEC 180xx series of documents.

The aim of this agreement is to facilitate the exchange of environmental data within and between all Level 3 (Command and Staff), Level 2 (Tactical), and Level 1 (Individual and Crew) modelling and simulation (M&S) systems. The scope of the standard includes M&S systems that are used for operations, training and analysis. This agreement applies to M&S systems developed by, and located in, different NATO Nations. The STANAG does not restrict the use of standards covered by the ISO 191xx series of documents.
