Purpose
The purpose of this Specification is to specify the materials and workmanship (M&W) to be used for deep tube tunnels and shafts on London Underground. The format of this M&W specification follows that of the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition 2010, highlighting only any differences, clarifications or omissions that are necessary when applying this specification to works on London Underground. The aim of this document is to avoid the need for bespoke specifications to be written for each project relating to London Underground deep tube tunnels and shafts and to assist in the development of generic products and methodologies that can be applied to provide a consistent approach to the construction and maintenance of these structures.
Throughout the remainder of this document the term "BTS Specification" shall be taken refer to the British Tunnelling Society and Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for Tunnelling Third Edition 2010.
