scope:
a) MGMP (MOD Geospatial Metadata Profile) specifies metadata elements for describing geospatial data resources such as datasets, series and services. The resources may be in digital form on a network or media, alternatively, the resources may be in hardcopy available from a supplier at a physical address. The proposed MGMP metadata elements include the complete set of metadata elements from UK GEMINI 2.1 and map to a subset of the ISO 19115. Additional elements are proposed specifically for use with MOD geospatial data and services.
b) Metadata documents conforming to the MGMP are expected to be encoded according to an extension of the ISO 19139 XML encoding for geospatial metadata [13]. ISO 19139 presents the XML encoding of ISO 19115 metadata elements. Conformance to ISO 19139 ensures that the metadata can be exchanged between catalogue services based on standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) - an international grouping of more than 400 organisations involved in the development and usage of geospatial technologies.
c) This MGMP specification includes a metadata schema, specified using the Unified Modelling Language (UML), which extends the ISO 19115 metadata schema. This MGMP specification does not include an XML schema based on ISO 19139. It is a relatively straightforward task to generate an XML schema from the MGMP UML representation by applying the ISO 19118 encoding rules using a Model Driven Architecture [14].
