Purpose and Scope
This Standard applies to helmets and faceshields intended to provide protection to the heads and faces of law enforcement personnel during riots or other crowd control situations and in any other situations in which there is a threat of violent attack to the head and face.
The scope of this Standard is limited to riot helmets and faceshields, hereafter referred to as "head protectors". It should be noted that they are not necessarily designed to offer protection against ballistic missiles. Manufacturers who wish to claim ballistic properties for their head protectors should reference NIJ Standard 0106.01.
Physical and performance requirements and corresponding test methods are given for
(a) conditioning for testing;
(b) optical quality;
(c) areas to be protected;
(d) stability of head protector;
(e) resistance to liquid penetration;
(f) faceshield deflection;
(g) impact attenuation;
(h) resistance to penetration;
(i) strength of retention system;
(j) flame resistance; and
(k) labelling.
