Scope and Responsibility

This Standard Practice is limited to helical and herringbone enclosed speed reducers and increasers where pitch line velocities are less than 5000 feet per minute and pinion speeds are less than 3600 revolutions per minute. No limitations are placed on design or proportions other than those specifically mentioned.

The Standard Practices for Gearmotors, In-Line Reducers, Shaft Mounted Units, and High Speed Units are treated separately--see AGMA Publications Index.

The responsibility for satisfactory operation is assumed by the manufacturer only when:

The gear unit is properly installed and lubricated;

The system of connected rotating parts is free from serious critical speeds and torsional vibrations;

The transmitted loads are within the limits for which the gear unit was designed.
