This report is published as an informational report of ITE. It provides a "snapshot" of the state of sustainable transportation engineering as applied by transportation practitioners, based primarily on a survey of ITE members. It also identifies substantial knowledge gaps that will help ITE and its members identify next steps in promoting sustainable transportation projects and programs. Sustainable transportation projects are becoming increasingly important as the world population grows, resources shrink, and environmental impacts become more pervasive. Rules and regulations from federal to local levels are already evolving in response to this emerging mega-issue. ITE members are among the world's leaders in identifying and developing innovative and sustainable practices in the transportation industry.
