Good communications are an integral part of the good running of the LU network and where LU operates trains over and adjacent to the national rail network. Good communications are important for the speedy resolution of any incident / situation both on LU and Network Rail infrastructure.
This book requires that general communications on LU, and Network Rail premises by all users will be managed such that:
- the message is clearly understood by all those involved
- communications equipment is used correctly
- the operational status of communications equipment is checked, recorded and remedial action taken as appropriate.
There are also communications which are more specific to LU, which are standardised within this book to make sure they are:
- more generally understood

All safety critical communications within service control rooms must be by a means which is recorded.
Within this book, the term 'all concerned' means all the persons responsible for carrying out those particular instructions.
