scope:

This Standard applies to:

All categories and types of portable and transportable plant, machinery, tools and equipment as described in Section 3.1 of this document but excluding certain nonpowered, hand tools which comply with the relevant BS/EN and are to be used for their intended purpose involving no railway specific risk.

Plant which is intended for use in connection with the construction, maintenance and inspection of track, structures, infrastructure and fixed electric traction equipment forming part of the LU infrastructure.

Plant owned, hired or leased by LU or its contractors.

Plant not intended for use in the construction, maintenance and inspection of the LU track, structures, infrastructure or fixed electric traction equipment but which by its presence or use on the LU controlled infrastructure may represent a risk to the LU train service, operational assets or staff.

Unless stated otherwise under specific clauses, the requirements defined in this standard apply to all parts of the LU controlled infrastructure including the operational railway, depots and sidings and to Possession Areas or other temporary work sites established in any of these locations.

Purpose 

This Standard is one of four Standards which together define the requirements for the design, acceptance, use and maintenance of plant intended for use on the LU Network.

The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements for the: „

• Categorisation system to be used for plant
• Acceptance of plant (generic requirements).
• Identification of plant. „
• Management of plant and the associated records and documentation.
• Planning for the safe use of plant
• Safe deployment and use of plant. 
• Safe and effective maintenance of plant. 
• Competence of those involved with the management, use, inspection and maintenance of plant.
