This specification covers sintered bronze, oil-impregnated bearings made primarily from elemental copper, tin, lead, and graphite powders. The manufacturer may, at his discretion, use prealloyed bronze powder in the blend.
This specification covers the following variables:
Grades - Available in two grades, either plain bronze or leaded bronze. The two compositions are intended to be equivalent although the leaded bronze grade is normally specified for applications requiring a better shaft conforming material.
Class - Each grade is available in two classes, either no graphite or with graphite.
Type - Each grade and class is available in four types described by density ranges.
Bearings ordered to this specification will normally be sized after sintering and will be impregnated with a lubricating oil unless otherwise specified by print.
NOTE - A complete metric companion to Specification B 438 has been developed-B 438M; therefore, no metric equivalents are presented in this specification.
