This Standard applies to Passive Optical Branching Devices for optical fibers and cables.

In this Standard the devices considered have all of the following general feat u res :

- The devices are passive in that they contain no optoelectronic or other transducing elements and require no external power.

- Fiber optic branching devices are devices which have three or more ports for the ingress and/or egress of light and operate to distribute light among these ports in a predetermined fashion.

- The fiber optic branching devices have ports which are optical fibers or optical fiber connectors exclusively.

This standard does not cover the specification for connectors used with passive fiber optic branching devices. Requirements for connectors which are attached or are a part of the branching device shall be taken from ElMIA-475
