This standard specifies minimum requirements for type CL lubricating oils1).
The use of type CL lubricating oils is recommended in particular for recirculation lubrication in cases where the requirements for the resistance to ageing and/or corrosion protection can no longer be met by type C lubricating oils in accordance with DIN 51517-1.
Type CL lubricating oils can also be used as hydraulic oils and general purpose lubricating oils or engine oils.
The use of type CL lubricating oils is recommended for applications where the effect of water may give rise to corrosion or where type C lubricating oils in accordance with DIN 51517-1 used at elevated temperatures may result in lifetimes that are too short. In cases where the requirements for the anti-wear protection in the mixed friction zone are higher, type CLP lubricating oils in accordance with DIN 51517-3 are preferred. When using type CL lubricating oils for machine tools, DIN 8659-2 also needs to be taken into account.
