GENERAL

This Manual is intended to serve only as a guide in the task of inspecting elevators, escalators, and moving walks. This Manual is based on the Rules of the ANSI/ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, and contains recommendations for the inspection of equipment which is required to conform with that Code. Inspectors should be guided by whatever requirements are legally in force. Any recommendations made herein apply only insofar as they conform to the legal requirements. It is not intended that this Manual be used as, or in place of a legal code, but rather that it be used in whole or in part as a practical guide for the inspection and testing of elevators, escalators and moving walks.

This Manual is based, in general, on the 1981 edition of the A17.1 Code. It has also been updated to reflect changes made to Part X in Supplement A17.1a-1982. However, since inspection and testing procedures are normally added to this Manual after the requirements have been added to the Code, the latest edition or supplement of A17.1 should be consulted to ascertain the most recent requirements.
