Scope of the Standard. Def Stan 05-58, uses new concepts and procedures to provide the customer with a quantified assurance of the quality of an Isolated Lot. It has been written with a view to the possible needs of a wide range of users and covers every foreseen circumstance which might arise in sampling an isolated lot. It also provides a number of options so that the user can choose the one most suited to his needs and circumstances. As a consequence the standard is a large document and may appear to the non-specialist to be somewhat formidable. However when applied within a single factory or for a particular type of product only a limited selection from the tables will need to be used. Similarly for many users some of the possible circumstances will never arise and for many others they will be very rare. The flow diagrams (Annex B and Annex C of the Standard) show the 'main routes' in heavy lines; in the great majority of applications it will not be necessary to depart from them.

Scope of the Guide. The purpose of this Guide, which should always be read in conjunction with the Standard, is to explain the new concepts and procedures and to assist those responsible for determining sampling inspection requirements to decide when Def Stan 05-58 should be used and to choose an appropriate sampling scheme from it. The Guide also provides detailed guidance to those who are required to operate sampling schemes from Def Stan 05-58 and gives examples at Annex A. Examples 1 and 2 are set out very fully and cover the procedures which will be usual in everyday use.
