The standard describes turbidity applied in the control of water quality, and is primarily determined by spot testing. Unsystematic changes in turbidity may take place during sampling of mixed test specimens or by storage. If a test specimen contains rapidly sedimenting particles turbidity cannot be determined as the result varies considerably with time.
