Application and Scope:This standard shall apply to the storage of materials that represent the broad range of commodities stored in racks.

Exception: Miscellaneous storage shall be permitted to be protected in accordance with NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems.

This standard shall not apply to storage on plastic shelves.

This standard shall not apply to the storage of high hazard materials such as tires, roll paper stored on end, and flammable liquids, which is outside the scope of this standard. Storage of such commodities shall be protected in accordance with the provisions of NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code; NFPA 40, Standardfor the Storage and Handling of Cellulose Nitrate Motion Picture Film; NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code; NFPA 231, Standard for General Storage; NFPA 231D, Standard for Storage of Rubber Tires; NFPA 231F, Slandard for the Storage of Roll Paper; NFPA 232, Standard for the Protection of Records; and NFPA 490, Code for the Storage of Ammonium Nitrate, as applicable.

This standard shall not apply to bin storage and shelf storage.

Nothing in this standard is intended to restrict new technologies or alternate arrangements, provided the level of safety prescribed by the standard is not reduced.
