This specification covers the requirements for a counter-drum-pointer, integrally lighted, self-contained altimeter-encoder (indicator) having a range of −1,000 to 50,000 ft. with an encoded altitude output in accordance with the U.S. National Standard for Common System Component Characteristics for SIF/ATCRBS.

Two types of altimeter-encoders are covered by this specification and differ only in respect to variation in color of the integral white lighting as follows:

I. Type AAU-32/A-1 Altimeter-Encoder (interchangeable with AAU-32/A) - Incorporates "aviation red" lighting and "blue filtered" white lighting.

II. Type AAU-32/A-2 Altimeter-Encoder (interchangeable with AAU-32A/A) - Incorporates "aviation red" lighting and "instrument and panel" white lighting.
