(Footnote *) This standard covers the minimum requirements for the installation of standpipes, private hydrants, monitor nozzles, hose systems, and hose houses including methods and procedures of waterflow testing for the evaluation of water supplies. This standard does not cover requirements for periodic inspection, testing, and maintenance of these systems.

Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to provide a reasonable degree of protection for life and property from fire through installation requirements for standpipe, hydrants, and hose systems based on sound engineering principles, test data, and field experience. Nothing in this standard is intended to restrict new technologies or alternate arrangements, provided that the level of safety prescribed by the standard is not lowered.
