Organization: CSA
Publication Date: 1 June 1983
Status: inactive
Page Count: 32
scope:

These requirements apply to signal equipment for supply voltages up to 600 V ac, both permanently and cord connected, intended for household and industrial use in non-hazardous locations, in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

The requirements are not intended to replace other requirements that are mandated by provincial or federal authorities for aspects other than electrical fire and shock hazards nor do they specify the performance of signal equipment.

Signal equipment includes the following types and may include others not specifically mentioned below or not covered in the scope of other Part II Standards:

(a) Audible signal (including buzzers, bells, horns, and sirens);

(b) Carbon monoxide ventilation control;

(c) Computerized activity monitor;

(d) Energy management;

(e) Gas pressure alarm;

(f) Level sensor (including liquid level and bin or hopper level sensors);

(g) Nurse call;

(h) Photo relay system (not including street lighting control);

(i) Power failure warning alarm;

(j) Sound-activated switch.

Devices that generate radio frequency signals may also be subject to the requirements of the Department of Communications (Canada).

Medical gas pressure alarms are also subject to the requirements of CSA Standard Z305.1, Non-flammable Medical Gas Piping Systems.

This Standard includes requirements for double-insulated signal equipment for use in non-hazardous locations on supply circuits not exceeding 150 volts-to-ground and designed to be used in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.
