INTRODUCTION

This document specifies a standard measurement methodology for consumer high-fidelity analog open-reel and cassette tape recording and reproducing equipment. Although a similar methodology can be applied to other analog formats, e.g. the eight-track cartridge and professional and semi-professional tape recorder/reproducers, it was not the intention.of the Committee to cover these formats in a comprehensive manner. Digital tape recorders are specifically excluded from this Standard.

The Committee placed great emphasis upon those characteristics that reflect the ability of a tape recorder/reproducer to aid in the faithful reproduction of original sound under conditions similar to those used by the listener. In particular, the Standard Test Conditions regarding control settings more accurately reflect the performance of the recorder/reproducer as it is used than has been the case in previously proposed standards. The advent and widespread use of spectrum analyzers makes possible measurements that heretofore were impractical, and the definitions of harmonic and inter-modulation distortion reflect the practicality of specifying distortion in a more rigorous and useful manner.

It should be emphasized that this document is neither a manufacturing standard nor a performance standard in the sense of specifying criteria of acceptability. It is solely a standardization of measurement and rating methodology. Insofar as feasible in light of the goals of the Committee, applicable IEC and ANSI standards have been followed. However, it should be noted that this standard differs from the relevant IEC document (Publication 94-3) by specifying standard input, output, and recorded levels to which specifications are referred. It is the Committee's firm belief that standardized reference levels are needed if the consumer is to make meaningful comparisons among products.
