Preface This is the second edition of the CSA A3000, Cementitious Materials Compendium. It supersedes the first edition published in 1998.
The objective of the first edition of the CSA A3000 compendium was to consolidate the test methods that existed separately within each of the component Standards - A5, A8, A23.5, A362, and A363 - by eliminating redundancies and sometimes inconsistent guidance that existed between otherwise similar test methods within the five cementitious materials Standards and inserting them into a new series of Standards: the A456 series of test methods.
The objective of this second edition of the CSA A3000 compendium is to complete substantially this consolidation by merging A5, A23.5, and A362 into a single Standard: A3001, Cementitious Materials for Use in Concrete. A363, Cementitious Hydraulic Slag, is withdrawn with the publication of this Standard. In addition to A3001, this second edition consists of
a) A3002, Masonry and Mortar Cement, which supersedes A8;
b) A3003, Chemical Test Methods for Cementitious Materials for Use in Concrete and Masonry, which supersedes A456.1;
c) A3004, Physical Test Methods for Cementitious Materials for Use in Concrete and Masonry, which supersedes A456.2; and
d) A3005, Test Equipment and Materials for Cementitious Materials for Use in Concrete and Masonry, which supersedes A456.3.
The five Standards within this second edition of the CSA A3000 compendium have been given A3000 series identifiers to emphasize the differentiation between these new, consolidated Standards and the earlier unconsolidated Standards. All definitions in this CSA A3000 series of Standards have been consolidated within A3001. In addition, A3001, A3002, A3003, A3004, and A3005 contain specific changes.
The A3001 Standard comprises the following changes:
- guidance is provided for blended hydraulic cements consisting of a portland cement and up to three supplementary cementing materials;
- guidance is provided for blended supplementary cementing materials containing up to three com pon en ts;
- the nomenclature for portland cements has been modified to a two-letter descriptive designation;
- the nomenclature for blended hydraulic cements has been modified to a three-letter descriptive designation to address its equivalent performance to portland cements with up to three supplementary cementing materials;
- as a maximum of three separate components is now allowed in blended supplementary cementing materials, the nomenclature has been modified to allow for the naming of the components and the reporting of the percentages;
- a provision has been included for the testing of processing additions when slag, fly ash, or natural pozzolans are present;
- the C,A limit for MH and MS (A3000-98 Type 20) has been changed;
- the maximum silica fume content of blended hydraulic cements has been increased;
- the equation for uniformity used in the calculation has been altered to be statistically correct in population size;
- with the publication of this Standard, cementitious hydraulic slag is included by definition as ground granulated blast furnace slag. The requirements for this product are incorporated in the specifications for supplementary cementing materials;
- a definition for hydraulic cement has been added; hydraulic cement is defined as either a portland cement, a blended hydraulic cement, a mortar cement, or a masonry cement;
- the definition of blended hydraulic cement has been altered to accommodate more than a single supplementary cementing material;
- the uniformity requirements clause has been modified to clarify that the uniformity requirement is intended for the predominant product;
- calculation for correction of the apparent SO, contribution from sulphide sulphur has been added;
- Annex C has been added to explain the changes to the nomenclature of portland and blended hydraulic cement types; and
- Annex D has been added as a guide for the evaluation of alternative supplementary cementing materials for use in concrete.
The A3002 Standard contains the following changes:
- Appendix A has been removed because of duplication in A3004-Al; and
- mortar cements MCN and MCS have been added.
The A3003 Standard was formerly known as A456.1; the title has been changed to reflect the content more accurately.
The A3004 Standard has been changed as follows:
- the titles for test methods A456.2-C5 and A456.2-C6, now A3004-C5 and A3004-C6, respectively, have been modified to describe the tests more accurately;
- the method of loading for compression testing has been modified for consistency with ASTM; and
- a new test method - C9, Test Method for Determination of flexural Bond Strength - has been added.
- The A3005 Standard has been changed as follows:
- the description of gypsum for use in sulphate resistance testing has been reintroduced;
- the reference moulds for expansion testing have been changed to Type M moulds from Type F moulds;
- and the sand gradation requirements have been changed to harmonize with ASTM.
These Standards were prepared by the Technical Committee on Hydraulic Cement and Supplementary Cementing Materials, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Concrete and Related Products, and have been formally approved by the Technical Committee. They will be submitted to the Standards Council of Canada for approval as National Standards of Canada. The A3005 Standard has been changed as follows

(1) Use of the singular does not exclude the plural (and vice versa) when the sense allows.
(2) Although the intended primary application of this Standard is stated in its Scope, it is important to note that it remains the responsibility of the users of the Standard to judge its suitability for their particular purpose.
(3) This publication was developed by consensus, which is defined by CSA Policy governing standardization - Code of good practice for standardization as "substantial agreement. Consensus implies much more than a simple majority, but not necessarily unanimity". It is consistent with this definition that a member may be included in the Technical Committee list and yet not be in full agreement with all clauses of this publication.
(4) CSA Standards are subject to periodic review, and suggestions for their improvement will be referred to the appropriate committee.
