scope:
This standard covers acceptable instrumentation and procedures for the measurement of Time Base Error (TBE), Intertrack Time Displacement Error (ITDE), Composite Time Base Error (CTBE), and Pulse-To-Pulse Jitter (PPJ) in instrumentation magnetic-recording equipment. The measurement methods for TBE and CTBE described here are applicable only to recorders equipped with phase-lock-type capstan servos in which a closed-loop servo system controls the reproduced-tape speed by comparing the phase of a stable local reference signal with the reproduced reference-frequency signal. The average reproduced reference frequency is exactly equal or exactly proportional to the local reference frequency. These measurements are concerned only with the dynamic variation in phase between the local and reproduced reference-frequency signals. The measurement for ITDE and PPJ can be made with either a tachometer or tape phase-lock servo. This standard is issued because there is no other suitable industry standard in existence.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard is to provide standardized and reproducible measurement techniques to help the user ascertain the suitability of magnetic recording equipment for his requirements. This standard includes methods for performing acceptance and operational tests.
