The following requirements pertain to cargo handling gear on Military Sealift Command Interest (nucleus ships and chartered ships), foreign flag and Naval auxiliary and amphibious ships, which are to load or offload military ammunition (explosives) as defined in reference (a) at activities of the U. S. Navy. These requirements are in addition to those stipulated in reference (b). Cargo handling gear includes booms, masts, stays, wire rope, vangs, preventers, winches, cranes, steadying and running gear used for loading or unloading cargo from a ship. Combinations of this gear are defined as "rigging" as used herein. It does not include slings, bands, beams, spreader bars and similar loose handling gear periodically tested in accordance with OD 44941.
