Controls and Safety Devices for Automatically Fired Boilers

The rules of this Code cover requirements for the assembly, maintenance, and operation of controls and safety devices installed on automatically operated boilers directly fired with gas, oil, gas-oil, or electricity, subject to the service limitations and exclusions of CG-120 and CG-130. The use of a gaseous or oil fuel not listed in the definitions has not been evaluated and special considerations may be required.
Compliance with the requirements for the assembly and operation of controls and safety devices installed on automatically operated boilers fired with gas having inputs of 400,000 Btu/hr (117 228 W) or less, oil having inputs of 3 gph (11.4 L/h) or less, or electricity having inputs of 115 kW or less shall be as described in one of the following paragraphs.
(a) All gas-fired boiler burner units shall comply with Part CW and CE-110(a).
(1) Gas-fired boiler burner units listed and/or labeled by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Gas-Fired Low-Pressure Steam and Hot Water Boilers, ANSI Z21.13, meet the remaining requirements.
(b) Gas-fired swimming pool heaters that bear a label and/or are listed by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Gas-Fired Pool Heaters, ANSI Z21.56, meet this Code with no further requirements.
(c) Gas-fired burner assemblies shall bear a label and/or be listed by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Domestic Gas Conversion Burners, ANSI Z21.17. The units on which they are installed shall comply with the provisions of this Code.
(d) All oil-fired boiler burner units shall comply with Part CW and CE-110(a).
(1) Oil-fired boiler burner units listed and/or labeled by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Oil-Fired Boiler Assemblies, UL 726, meet the remaining requirements.
(e) Oil-fired burner assemblies shall bear a label and/or be listed by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Oil Burners, ANSI Z96.2 (UL 296). The units on which they are installed shall comply with the provisions of this Code.
(f) All electric boiler units shall comply with Part CW and CE-110(a).
(1) Electric boilers shall bear a label and/or be listed and/or labeled by a nationally recognized testing agency or other organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as complying with the Standard for Heating, Water Supply, and Power Boilers - Electric, UL 834, meeting the remaining requirements.
