INTRODUCTION

This leaflet addresses the sources of noise and vibration likely to be experienced by an aeroplane. Advice and information, on the various sources, is given under the following headings.

Aerodynamic Sources. This para considers vibration excitation generated by aerodynamic turbulence; attached and detached flow; vortex flow; critical flow and wing-buzz.

Power Plant Sources. This para considers noise and vibration arising from engine intake flow effects; engine surge and engine mechanical sources.

Jet Plume Effects. The para contains information on jet noise mixing; choked Jets and Jet attachment effects.

Cavities. The noise and vibration inducing effects of cavities exposed to the airflow are considered.

Operation of Weapon Systems. Reference is given to other Leaflets with regard to the operation of guns.

For propeller aeroplanes additional advice and information relating to the noise and vibration arising specifically from propeller generated effects are given in Leaflet 501/6.
