scope:
This Standard applies to the design of highway bridges that have spans up to 100 m, and is based upon the limit states design theory. The Standard sets forth minimum requirements that are consistent with current practice. Modifications may be necessary in order to adapt the Standard for use in the design of a specific bridge, unusual types of bridges, and bridges with spans longer than 100 m.
This Standard may be used in the design of bridges required to carry pedestrian, cyclist, or equestrian traffic. When this type of traffic is a design consideration, the regulatory authority shall specify the loadings to be used.
This Standard may be used to proportion the structural members of movable bridges. For specific requirements peculiar to movable bridges, reference may be made to AASHTO Standard Specifications for Movable Highway Bridges. The live load shall be as specified by the regulatory authority.
