Purpose.
To establish the requirements and responsibilities on funding and performance of type life evaluations on air-launched guided missile, aircrew escape, jet assisted take-off (JATO), and rocket propulsion systems, subsystems and components.
Applicability.
This instruction applies to all activities directly responsible for design, development, testing, procurement, engineering, and modifications affecting air launched propulsion units. Type life evaluation is needed for every air launched propulsion unit which meets any of the following criteria unless waived, based on similarity by the NAVAIRHQ cognizant technical office (Weapons Engineering Division, (AIR-540)). The following criteria reflect historical experience that aging differences can exist because of differences in processing procedures, raw material suppliers, personnel expertise, and experience:
a. Unit produced for the first time in the current configuration.
b. Unit being produced for the first time at a given facility.
c. Unit being produced for the first time in 5 years at a facility where it was previously produced.
