Introduction

This standard defines the requirements for the support of TIA/EIA-136 mobile stations equipped with a Removable-User Identity Module also referred to as Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). The SIM is an entity that stores and manages the identity of the subscriber and their personal network and subscriber related data. The SIM may be physically removed from one Mobile Equipment (ME) and inserted into another as long as both have compatible SIM/ME interfaces.

The network service provider may update the data stored in the SIM. This data may be updated via over-the air teleservices and parameter administration techniques or via external programming devices.

SIMs may be supported on non TIA/EIA-41 based mobile stations and thus permit a TIA/EIA-41 based subscriber to access service on a non TIA/EIA-41 network if compatible interfaces exist.

These requirements are expressed as additions to the specifications of the GSM SIM which are included as normative references in Section 1.1.
